This is a short climb to a dead end - no traffic and a lot of STEEP!
Good luck getting up this with normal gearing . . . 😓

We love San Francisco. The combination of legendary steepness, good food, and tons of great sightseeing makes this an awesome city to cycle in. Just outside the city are some of the most popular cycling climbs in America, like Mt. TamMt. DiabloHawk Hill, and Mt. Umunhum, making the Bay area one of the best cycling destinations in the country.

CLIMB SUMMARY

This climb includes the steepest paved gradient in the world (to our knowledge) at 41%

The rest of the climb is a “mild” 24% average grade. This photo shows the last few meters leading up to the steepest section (next to the staircase)

John Johnson, creator of PJAMM Cycling, attacking the climb.

John Johnson and Sam Lyons climbing up the steepest stretch of pavement in the world (that we know of 2021!)

Great views from the top. Don’t miss out on the Alemany Farmers Market at the base of this climb! (seen in the background)

Even though the rest of this climb is more mellow, none of it is easy.

A friendly neighbor taking a video of us to see what us PJAMM idiots were up to!

We found out from the neighbor that a few years ago, RedBull had filmed a commercial on this street (with skateboarders) as it is the steepest paved segment in the United States. But unfortunately, that footage was never published, and instead they went with Canton Ave in the Pittsburgh area for their final cut.

This section next to the stairs is certainly the steepest thing we’ve ever climbed on our bikes.
