CLIMB SUMMARY

Cycling Val Thorens

Ride 35.7 kilometers gaining 1,840 meters to 2,220 meters aat 4.8% average grade.

Built in 1971, Val Thorens is one of the best known resorts in the Alps.  The skiing really is extraordinary, with an amazing range of on and off piste terrain to explore. Beware, however, it is EXPENSIVE!

The resort hosted a Tour de France stage finish in 1994. Nelson Rodriguez of Colombia won the stage.  This was the only TdF stage win for Rodriguez and was the accomplishment of his career.  Val Thorens, at 2,220 meters, is the second highest finish in tour history (bested only by Col du Galibier). The Tour de France did not return to Val Thorens until  the Stage 20 finish on 27 July 2019,won by Vincenzo Nibali of Italy.
