I ride this climb fairly often - the road has been re-paved in some sections and there is currently two or three temporary signals as they are repairing the road from slip-outs.
A good little loop to do once you finish this climb is to climb a little more up Empire Grade Road to Pine Flat and descend Pine Flat to Ice Cream Grade. Take Ice Cream Grade down and up and you end up back at the top of Felton Empire after a short 3-5 mile loop.
There is more light on the road now since the CZU Lightning Complex fire in August 2020 has burned quite a few trees
