Rode last summer, before big fire. I'll check back this summer, but it is great ride. Go to Box Canyon and descend a ways, before coming back. If you do the whole Aufderheide, it is a long day.

CLIMB SUMMARY

Cycling Aufdeerheide Scenic Byway North

Ride 26 miles gaining 3,200’ at 1.8% average grade (3.2% climb only)

The Aufderheide Scenic Byway (Forest Road 19) connects Rainbow OR (1,209 ft., on the McKenzie River) with mountain-bike mecca Oakridge OR (also 1,209 ft., on the Willamette River), crossing a 3,620-foot divide at the rustic Box Canyon Forest Service facility.

Climb begins at the trestle bridge crossing the McKenzie River just south of Hwy 126.

The north side of the climb is heavily forested and very scenic (although somewhat scarred by forest fire), with constant views of the South Fork of the McKenzie River and Cougar Lake reservoir.  The climb begins at the Delta Campground, one mile west of Rainbow OR on State Highway 126.  From the campground, continue on Forest Road 19, cross the bridge over the McKenzie River, and take the first right turn (continuing straight is a dead-end road ending at the powerhouse below Cougar Lake reservoir).

Cougar Dam is 519’ tall

Cougar Reservoir is on the South Fork McKenzie River and is about 5 miles in length

The road is narrow, in good condition, with a few short gravel patches.  Enjoy the views.
