INTRO

Both sides of this col are a good challenge. On a clear day, there are lovely views of many surrounding climbs from the top of the col. The west side from St Lary Soulon meanders through some small villages on the way to the top. The Tour de France typically climbs the east (Genos) side of the col before going on to a stage finish in the area (such as Pla d’adet or Col de Portet). The Genos side is more difficult with many switchbacks.

If you are based in St Lary Soulon for a few days, there are many good climbs to attempt in the area. You can choose whether you want great scenery, a tough challenge, climbs steeped in Tour de France history, or a combination of these.

Tour de France 2021: Stage 17 (Category 1) - Anthony Perez (FRA) first to the summit in Stage 17 of the 2021 Tour de France.

Roadway: The roadway is in good shape on both sides of the col. The west side (from St Lary Soulon) has some narrower portions through the villages.

Traffic: There is little traffic on either side of the col.

Parking: You can park in Genos or St Lary Soulon.

Summer in the Pyrenees is normally warm and sunny, even at higher elevations. However, there are some periods of low clouds that can make the climbs quite damp. Bring warm clothes just in case. There are bike shops in St Lary Soulon.
Before heading out on any cycling adventure check out our Things to Bring on a Cycling Trip and use our interactive check list to ensure you don't forget anything.
There are places to stay in St Lary Soulon and some of the other villages in the area. St Lary Soulon also has restaurants and shops for food.

This side of the climb is a lovely set of switchbacks on a challenging gradient with increasingly good views as you go up. At the top, you can see many of the better known climbs of the area snaking up the mountain sides across the valleys. The Tour de France is fond of doing this climb as a prelude to Pla d'Adet or more recently the Col de Portet.
