INTRO

This is the second hardest in bike climb in Sonoma County (behind Bald Mountain), and one of the most scenic.  The best views of any appellation in Sonoma County is seen from the Geysers bike climb.

Geysers Road is PJAMM's selection for third most scenic bike climb in the Bay Area.  The PJAMM Adventure App's preloaded trips for Sonoma, Napa and Bay Area Top 10 Most Scenic are viewed near the bottom of this page.
This one is ALL climb - 8.7% gaining 1,840' with 0 descent!  61% (2.5 miles) of the climb is at 5-10% grade, and 31% (1.2 miles) is at 10-15%.  The gradient profile does not register above 15%, but, according to my Garmin (unless I was hallucinating . . . a possibility  😓) the grade does briefly hit 16%.  The steepest quarter-mile is 12.4% and steepest continuous mile 9.6%.

See more details and tools regarding this climb's grade via the “Profile Tool” button.
Roadway:  Paved and in good shape other than a couple short stretches of gravel easily manageable on road bike.

Traffic:  Minimal - this is a safe climb.

Parking:  If you are doing this as a stand alone climb or using it as the starting point for the loop referenced under Travel Tips, park just before the start of the climb at the intersection of Red Winery and Geysers Roads -  MapStreet View.

Provisions: There is no water or food on this route and it can get very hot during the summer - bring plenty of water. The closest provisions are in Geyserville, five miles northwest, or in Healdsburg, nine miles south. The Jimtown Store, 1.5 miles southeast of the climb on Highway 128 may be an option if it has reopened after its closing in 2020.

This is a steep climb without respite. The views are amazing and worth the toil. In fact the last km or so tempt you to stop and take a picture and catch your breath. There is great loop past the geysers and the fire damage back to cloverdale with poor quality roads but definitely one of the most breathtaking (pardon the pun) rides in the area.

CLIMB SUMMARY

IMG_1905.JPG

Cycling Geysers Road - Sonoma County’s second hardest road bike climb

Ride 4.1 miles gaining 1,841’ at 8.7% average grade.

Climb summary by PJAMM’s John Johnson.

California Top 10 Most Scenic Bike Climb

This is the fourth highest Fiets Index ranked climb in the Sonoma-Napa-Lake  area and offers spectacular views of the Alexander Valley, one of the  premier vineyard regions in the world.  The climb, with a couple of exceptions, has a fairly even, albeit steep, 6-8% grade throughout.  The descent of the Geysers is one of the most  exciting in the county. During the summer, the temperatures can approach and  exceed 100 degrees, so beware of the weather.

Supplies:  Geyserville and/or the Jimtown Store have any supplies you would need  for this climb.

If climbing Ida Clayton, Geysers or Pine Flat, be sure to stop at the Jimtown Store

6706 Hwy 128, Healdsburg

Roadway surface/Traffic:  The roadway is in fairly good condition, other than 2 brief  stretches of gravel just beyond the 3 mile mark.  Traffic is very light and the road  is wide and often has a bike lane.  This is one of the safer climbs you will find.

Steepest ¼ mile begins at mile .4 (12%)
