Very pleasant climb back up Col de Spandelles from the western side - this one reminds us of Italy's Col della Fauniera from Ponte Marmora.

Featured in Stage 18 of the 2022 Tour de France

Climb begins in the very small town (pop. 84) of Ferrieres, north of Col du Solour and west of Argeles Gazost.

I do not recall how we had the good fortune of discovering Col de Spandelles when we visited the Pyrenees (Argeles Gazost/Luz Saint Sauveur) in 2013 but I feel quite lucky that we did stumble across it.  The climb begins in the small and charming town of Fererriers and climbs a single lane rough road through lush surroundings an open col 10 kilometers up.  The climb is steep throughout (averaging just over 8%) with 500 meters at 10.3% and a full kilometer at 9.2%.

Col de Spandelles is a little known route that is in close proximity to the much more popular and well known (if not famous) climbs of Col du Soulor and Col d’Aubisque.  A nice and short loop from Argeles Gazost includes Col du Soulor and Col de Spandelles at 585 kilometers with 1,976 meters of climbing (PJAMM’s Col du Soulor + Col de Spandelles Loop Page).

Perhaps we will never experience the privacy we have climbing Spandelles in 2013 and again in 2018 - the Tour de France features the col from Fererriers on Stage 18 in the middle of Col d’Aubisque and the mountaintop finish at Hautacam.
