CLIMB SUMMARY

Ain't that the truth . . .

Dunraven Pass - Cycling Yellowstone National Park

Ride 12.8 miles gaining 2,828’ at 4% average grade.

This is the top bike climb of Yellstone’s Grand Loop.

Climb ends at the Mt. Washburn trailhead.

Thank you Bruce!

Cycling Yellowstone NP and throughout Montana and Wyoming was one of our favorite cycling adventures of all time. On August 4, 2015, we cycled Yellowstone’s Grand Loop (PJAMM’s Grand Loop Page) which included scenic Dunraven Pass, Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic Spring, the Continental Divide, and Mammoth Hot Springs, to name a few of the great Yellowstone attractions along the route.

Ride summary by PJAMM’s Bruce Hamilton, La Quinta, CA, USA.

This ride is in the Northeast section of Yellowstone, an area heavy with wildlife. Starting in Tower Junction you’ll ride through forest and then come to the Tower Falls at the 2.5 mile mark. We encountered a buffalo in the road during our ascent – not something you see on too many rides.

We also saw bears on a nearby road a few hours later. As you climb you reach higher elevation and wide open views. Fire has swept through this area several times, and as a result there are burnt areas and areas of blowdown, making it seem like you’re above treeline before you actually are.

This ride can have heavy traffic during summer, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer months – both can be avoided by starting early. Not a difficult climb but a beautiful one with a good road surface and a fun descent.
