Cycling New England's White Mountains - NPS sign for White Mountain National Forest, fall foliage

Cycling New England’s White Mountain National Forest

The White Mountains are a world renowned destination to view the beautiful fall colors of New England.  Our favorite White Mountain Fall Colors bike climb was Hurricane Mountain Road.  The hardest White Mountain bike climb by far is Mt. Washington Auto Road.  However, cyclists are only permitted to ride a bike up Mt. Washington twice per year, during the summer, not the fall -- thus, no fall color bike riding on Mt. Washington.

From White Mountains National Forest Home Page:

“The White Mountain National Forest in eastern New Hampshire and western Maine ranges from mountainous hardwood forests to majestic alpine peaks. Come experience the breathtaking scenery, clear mountain lakes and streams, wildlife, and outdoor recreation opportunities year round,” (read more here).

White Mountains Visitor Center, Lincoln, New Hampshire

We stayed in and loved the quaint and charming resort town of Lincoln during our three days documenting bike climbs in the area. The Route 118 and Kancamagus Highway climbs are accessed from Lincoln, and Hurricane Mountain is only 45 miles from Lincoln (we drove to Hurricane Mountain for the rides in that area).

Kancamagus Highway is often sited as the #1 venue for fall colors in the White Mountains.
