THE FIVE HIGHEST POINTS THE TOUR DE FRANCE HAS EVER REACHED

#1: CIME DE LA BONETTE 2802M

photo collage shows small old mission style church, signs along climb including one for Jausiers and one for Route de la Bonette, flags for different countries line roadside

Cima de la Bonette has been the high point of the TdF in each of its four appearances.

#2: COL DE L’ISERAN 2770M

photo collage shows PJAMM Cyclist John Johnson standing with bike in front of sign for Col de L'iseran, sharp mountain peaks, bike parked next to roadsign reading Col de L'iseran

Col de L’Iseran has been the high point of the TdF in each of its eight appearances.

#3: COL AGNEL 2744M

photo collage shows sign for Summit, sign reading La Demoiselle Coiffe, pockets of snow along beautiful green hillsides

Included in only one TdF and it was the highest that year.

This is a stunning and highly recommended climb if you ever have the opportunity.

#4: COL DU GALIBIER - 2642M

photo collage, cyclists climb on two-lane roadway toward snow dotted mountain tops, PJAMM Cyclist stands with bike in front of green mountain views, road sign for Galibier

One of the greatest and most famous bike climbs in the world.

Galibier has been included in more Tour de France races (63) than all but four other climbs.  The vast majority of the times it has been included, it has been the highest point in the tour -- 50 of its 63 appearances.

#5: COL DU GRANON - 2413M

Cycling Col du Granon - photo collage shows street signs along the Col du Granon route

Col du Granon appeared in the 1986 and 2022 Tour de France races. It was never the highest point, although it is the fifth highest point the tour has reached since 1903.  That’s because the two appearances of Granon also included Col du Galibier, which is just over 200 meters higher than Granon.

We have researched and documented for this page the 30 hardest and most difficult bike climbs ever included in the Tour de France.

The all-time hardest bike climbs of the Tour de France can be viewed on this page via the map (zoom in to view climbs in particular areas), by Climb Cards (photo and stats) or by a detailed list of the climbs that can be arranged in metric or imperial units by difficulty, distance (longest climbs in the area), altitude gained, highest elevation (highest summit), average grade (sort the grades by varying distances), lowest start point, etc. Click on "Climb Page" to jump to the detail page for that particular bike climb. We feel this page provides a good summary of the top, hardest and best bicycling climbs of the Tour de France.
