INTRO
In the 1905 Tour de France, Henri Desgrange introduced mountains to "make the race harder". In a statement before the race, Desgrange said that he expected every rider to have to get off their bikes and walk. And all did, except one: Ren Pottier. Pottier proved Desgrange wrong by riding all the way to the top - even passing Desgrange's motorcade in front of the riders - and proving to Desgrange that intense climbing was possible in the Tour de France.
