CLIMB SUMMARY

Cycling Terry Peak Summit Road - the hardest bike climb in South Dakota.

Ride 6.1 miles gaining 1,539’ at 4.4% average grade (5.5% climb only).

Climb begins in Englewood at George S. Mickelson Trailhead.

The George S. Mickelson Trail:

“Experience this 106.5-mile point-to-point trail near Deadwood, South Dakota. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 36 h 26 min to complete. This is a popular trail for hiking, mountain biking, and running, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day.”  Alltrails.com - Mickelson Trail. 

The first 2.8 miles average 4.2%

Turn off of Hwy 14A onto Terry Peak Summit Road at mile 2.8

We ride on gravel from the turn off onto Terry Peak Summit Road for the next 3.2 miles at 5% average grade to the top.  While it is a bit bumpy, the road is manageable on a road bike, although 30mm+ tires are recommended.

Gravel for the last 3.2 miles - the last 9/10’s of a mile averages 8.3%.

We finish at Terry Peak.

There is an observation tower at the top of the climb that overlooks the Goldcorp Express #2, Kussy Express #1 and Surprise Express #3 chairlifts of Terry Peak Ski Area.
