CLIMB SUMMARY

Cycling SR 259 South

Ride 6.4 miles gaining 1,086’ at 3.1% average grade.

Climb summary by PJAMM ambassador Dan Razum, San Jose, California.

This is a nice climb that takes us into Ouachita National Forest.  We start at Cucumber Creek and have a fairly gentle climb up to the top of the mountain.  There are a lot of trees on either side of the road, but not always close enough to provide much shade, however.

Climb begins at Cucumber Creek

The road is in good condition, smooth pavement, with a decent shoulder most of the way. Cars can move pretty fast on the road, but the traffic isn't heavy, so the ride felt safe. The gradient is never steep, so we can get into a pretty good climbing rhythm. There aren't any views along the climb, the forest is too thick.

At the top we reach Three Sticks Monument, with a little bit of a view of the valley to the north. Unfortunately, there are no restrooms or water at the monument.

Three Sticks Mounument - these sticks symbolize land, wood and water.

The monument is at the top and finish of the climb and recognizes U.S. Sentors Robert Kerr, U.S. Sen. Mike Monroney, U.S. Rep. Carl Albert, Gov. Raymond Gary and R.G. Miller for their contributions to conservation in southeastern Oklahoma
