You can ride all the way from Prineville, which I've done. This is nice little climb. If you're riding back to Bend, there are not great options, since Alfalfa and Powell-Butte are not bike-friendly and 20 is major highway.

The Crooked River Canyon extends 22 miles south from Prineville OR, climbing 1,402 feet along the scenic Crooked River, a popular fishing stream.

The ride begins at Crooked River Park on the outskirts of Prineville (2,865 ft., parking, restrooms, water) and continues upriver to the Prineville Dam and Reservoir at 18.6 miles (3,294 ft.).  Another 3 miles of road and 700 feet of climbing take you to the top of the mesa at Reservoir Road.
