“This combination of roads (really one road) is a short and solid hill that is very popular with area riders as it carries folks from the Springfield/Holyoke/Westfield areas towards more gravity challenging riding.  From the junction you pull away over mostly moderate grade.  The road becomes Southampton Road at some point as you gain altitude.  About 2/3rds of the way up the hill you find a descent, knocking down the average grade.  Soon climbing resumes over the most challenging grade on the mountain.  Toward the very top the slope eases up to its listed top at the junction with the main road to the town of Montgomery.” (This quote provided with the approval of John Summerson from his book, The Complete Guide to Climbing (by Bike) in the Northeast, pg. 84.)
