INTRO

"The east side of Dead Indian Pass on Route 296 is an isolated and somewhat treeless ascent in stark and scenic northern Wyoming. It is along fairly steady grade overall and has some very good views close to and from the summit. The bottom starts out somewhat shallow but the route gradually steepens as you ride west over the lower slopes on the ridge. There are a few big switchbacks over the middle portion of the climb along a somewhat narrow road and with a single cattle guard to cross. Near the top there is a small descent but ascending soon resumes and then the final 1.5 miles climb to the scenic and historic...pass over fairly solid grade. The east side of Dead Indian is a fast in places and fun descent as well..." (Quoted with the approval of John Summerson from The Complete Guide to Climbing (by Bike), 2nd Edition, pg. 232.)

CLIMB SUMMARY

Cycling Dead Indian Pass, Shoshone National Forest.

DEAD INDIAN PASS WEST

Climb Summary from PJAMM’s Bruce Hamilton.

The west side climb up Dead Indian Pass starts and where the river crosses the road about 7.5 miles from the summit. The climb from this side is shorter and steeper than the east side ascent and more scenic. The forest is a little more dense on the west slope and the road has many hairpins that are visible below as you climb higher. It’s quite remote but highly recommended if you are in the area. We rode both sides of this pass in one ride – easy to do in one day. Smooth surface – good for both the climb and the descent.

Hairpins visible below as we ascend.

Ride 7.5 miles gaining 2,072’ at 5.2% average grade.

DEAD INDIAN PASS EAST

Cycling Dead Indian Pass East

Ride 13.3 miles gaining 3,070’ at 4.2% average grade.

Thanks much Bruce and Stacy!!!
