Not too difficult. Should be named “Middle Valley/Zellars” to avoid confusion with Schooley Mtn. Road, which is a tough but very heavily trafficked climb out of Long Valley NJ.

CLIMB SUMMARY

Cycling Schooley Mountain

Ride 1.5 miles gaining 617’ at 7.7% average grade.

This is the 11th hardest bike climb in New Jersey.

Climb summary by PJAMM ambassador Dan Razum.

The climb starts on Middle Valley Road, just past the intersection with West Mill Road.

Middle Valley Road  is narrow, with a decent amount of traffic since it serves several residential streets nearby. As we climb higher and branch off onto other roads the traffic decreases.  The road isn't wide but the speed limit is low and traffic wasn't bad when we rode it.

Pretty soon after starting we come to the steepest section, which is a sharp 180 degree turn.

The road is steep for another quarter mile or so beyond the sharp turn and then it becomes more shallow. A little after the sharp turn we turn right onto Zellers Road.  There are more patches in the pavement on Zellers Road but the condition isn't too bad. We ride on Zellers Road for 3/4 of a mile and then finally turn right onto W Springtown Road.

Turn right onto W. Springtown Road at mile 1.2

The road becomes less steep until finally we reach the top. The top is unmarked and is little hard to tell, it's basically where the road becomes flat.

Top of the climb.
