CLIMB SUMMARY

Cycling Purau Port Levy Road from Port Levy

Ride 4.5 kilometers gaining 440 meters at 9.9% average grade.

This scenic bike climb is the 7th hardest in New Zealand with an overall average grade nearly double digits and 2 kilometers averaging 12.5%.

Climb summary by PJAMM’s Brad Butterfield.

As with the Purau side, the Port Levy side begins at the Bay. This side is less developed and there are only a few homes lining the lower section of the road. Within a kilometer, the road gets serious with double digit gradients that burn the legs until the summit. This area of New Zealand is sparsely populated and little traveled. There may be a few hikers at the summit in good weather, but likely you’ll have the views of the sharp mountains and uneven bay all to yourself.

Climb begins at the southern end of Port Levy Bay on Banks Peninsula just south of Christchurch.

The Monument is just past the finish and in view for much of the upper portion of the climb.

Finish.
