INTRO
Dolomitenhutte is the steepest sustained road climb in the Lienzer Dolomiten, and one of the steepest in Austria - 4.5 miles averaging 13.2% grade from the Tristach sports field to a mountain hut with a jaw-dropping direct view of the Lienz Dolomites' limestone spires. There's almost no flat ground anywhere on the route; the road holds a punishing, nearly constant grade from the first pedal stroke to the last.
The climb passes the turnoff for Tristacher See, a small alpine lake worth a stop on the way down, then continues past the Kreithof inn at roughly 1,050 meters before the final push to the hut itself. It's a toll road for motor vehicles, but cyclists ride free, which keeps car traffic - and therefore the road's biggest hazard on a climb this steep - meaningfully lighter than it would be otherwise.
Currently ranked #245 in the world by PJAMM's difficulty index, this is a short climb by Alpine standards but a genuinely hard one - the kind of ride where gearing matters more than fitness. Best tackled May through September, when the upper road is reliably clear of snow and the hut is open for a well-earned coffee at the top.

Average grade is 13.2% over the climb's 4.5 miles - there is essentially no easy section. The steepest kilometer averages 14.7%, and the steepest single 100 yards touches 15.2%, both found in the climb's opening mile out of Tristach before the grade settles into a still-brutal high-12s to low-14s percent for the remainder of the ascent.
Roadway: The road is paved the entire way and in good condition, and though it operates as a toll road for motor vehicles, cyclists are not charged and ride free the whole way to the hut.
Traffic: Traffic is light to moderate - this is a dead-end road serving hikers, hut guests, and sightseers rather than a through-route, and the toll keeps casual car traffic down, but expect some vehicles on summer weekends heading up to the Dolomitenhutte for the view.
Parking: Start from the car park at the Tristach sports field (Sportplatz Tristach), which has ample parking and is the standard starting point for this climb; there's also a large lot at the top by the hut itself.
Low gearing matters more than usual here - with almost no flat ground to recover on, a compact crank or a wide-range cassette makes a real difference over 4.5 miles at 13%+. The Dolomitenhutte itself is a working mountain hut with food and drinks at the top, so you don't need to carry much beyond water for the ride up.

Stop at Tristacher See on the way down for a swim if the weather's warm - it's right off the route and a nice reward after a climb this steep.
