First couple km's the road is in poor condition, cracked, pitted, potholes. It get's slightly better for a while, but the last 1.2km were really bad except for the 400-500m of repaved section. I descended the west side and the top of that is even worse. I can see why not many do this on Strava.

CLIMB SUMMARY

Cycling Col du Sapey from the east.

Ride 9 kilometers gaining 635 meters at 7% average grade.

This is our favorite lesser known climb in the Saint Jean de Maurriene cycling climbing hub.  This side of Col du Sapey overlaps most of the Montdenis climb - go left at the fork to Sapey and right to Montdenis.

The hairpins on the side of the mountain are stark and easily distinguishable from the Maurienne Valley - 11 hairpins over 5.6 kilometers averaging 7.1%.

While this climb is little known, it has a great set of features at the top.  By the way, “le grand domaine cyclable du monde” means “the great cycling area of the world” in French, and we wholeheartedly agree.
