Etna (Belpasso) climbs 20.7 km (12.9 mi) at a 6.7% average grade, gaining 1,391 m (4,562 ft) from about 548 m (1,799 ft) up to 1,931 m (6,337 ft) near Rifugio Sapienza. The climb is steepest early - the first 500 m average 13.0% and the opening kilometer averages 11.2% - before settling into a long, steadier grind: 9.8% through the first 2 km, easing to 7.9% by 5 km and 7.4% by 10 km as the route holds a consistent grade the rest of the way up.
Roadway: The SP92 is paved the entire way from Belpasso to Rifugio Sapienza and is in good condition. Etna has been in a continuous eruptive phase since December 2025, with activity concentrated at the summit craters well above this road - the SP92 and Rifugio Sapienza have generally stayed open through it, but the Città Metropolitana di Catania can restrict access on short notice on hazard guidance from the INGV Osservatorio Etneo, so check current status before you ride.
Traffic: The upper stretches near Rifugio Sapienza carry real tourist traffic - cars, tour buses, and shuttle vans headed for the cable car and the Etna Sud hiking trailheads, busiest around midday and on weekends. Lower down through Belpasso and the agricultural land on Etna's flank, traffic thins out considerably.
Parking: Belpasso is a working town rather than a tourist base, so there's no dedicated cyclist parking area - riders typically leave a car on a side street near the town center and start the climb from there. At the top, Rifugio Sapienza has a large paved lot serving the cable car station and mountain refuge.
Provisions: Belpasso has bars, bakeries, and small grocery shops for a coffee or to top off water before you start. There's little in the way of services on the climb itself until Rifugio Sapienza at the top, which is built up for tourism with restaurants, cafes, and gift shops serving visitors arriving for the cable car and the Etna Sud hiking trails.
Gear: The entire route is paved, so a standard road bike is fine - no need for the wide, knobby tires the loose volcanic track beyond Rifugio Sapienza would demand. Pack layers regardless of the season - Belpasso sits at roughly 548 m, but the finish near 1,931 m (6,337 ft) is noticeably cooler and can be windy, especially with active venting from the summit craters higher up.

Belpasso is worth a slow look around before or after the ride. The town was rebuilt after Etna's devastating 1669 eruption destroyed the original settlement, and it's since become known for the lava-stone sculptures scattered through its streets and piazzas, along with the olive oil, wine, and confectionery (it's home to the Condorelli sweets company) produced on Etna's volcanic soil.
Catania, with its airport and a full range of hotels, is about 15 km away and a practical base if you're combining this climb with Etna's other paved approaches from Nicolosi, Zafferana Etnea, or Piano Provenzana on the north side. Since the finish sits near 1,931 m on an active volcano, check current conditions before you go with our Weather tool.
