Antonimina - Zomaro climbs 7.4 km (4.6 mi) from 250 m (821 ft) to 1004 m (3,295 ft), a gain of 766 m (2,512 ft) at an average grade of 10.2%.
The first two kilometers climb at 10.0% and 10.1% straight out of the village. The road then steps up to 13.4% in the third kilometer and 12.9% in the fourth, the hardest sustained section of the climb. After that the grade backs off in stages: 10.3% in the fifth kilometer, 9.1% in the sixth, 8.0% in the seventh, and about 4.5% over the final 0.4 km (0.2 mi).
The steepest 100 yd (91 m) reaches 23.0%, the steepest 0.25 mi (0.4 km) averages 16.2%, the steepest 0.5 km (0.3 mi) 14.8%, and the steepest kilometer (0.6 mi) 14.4%. The steepest mile (1.6 km) averages 13.4%, the steepest 2 km (1.2 mi) 13.2%, and the steepest 5 km (3.1 mi) 11.7%.
Roadway: The route is paved on the SP80, a provincial mountain road with a run of hairpins that climbs steeply out of Antonimina. Mountain roads in the Aspromonte can pick up potholes and washouts after wet winters, so watch the surface on the descent.
Traffic: This is a minor provincial road serving a small village and a national-park plateau rather than a through route, so volume is typically low, with local cars and visitors heading to the Zomaro woods.
Parking: Antonimina is a small village with limited parking, so leave the car in the village near the start rather than on the narrow lanes above it.
Gear: This is a climb for your lowest gears. A compact crankset with a 32- or 34-tooth cassette is a sensible choice for an average above 10% with kilometers at 13%.
Provisions: Fill your bottles in Antonimina before you start. Calabrian summer heat is intense on the lower slopes, so ride early or choose spring and autumn.

Antonimina sits in the Aspromonte foothills and is known for its thermal springs: the Terme use chloride-rich spring water for hydrotherapy, a good way to recover after the climb. Above the village, Tre Pizzi (705 m / 2,313 ft), a three-summited hill shared with neighboring Ciminà , offers views from the fortress of Gerace to the Ionian coast, and the ruins of an old hermit friars' church lie nearby.
The Aspromonte has more to see within reach. The Galasia waterfall, about 645 m (2,116 ft) up in the park, spills through three falls into pools that are popular for swimming in summer, and near Canolo the Timpe di Mutolo rise as three rock towers over 100 m (328 ft) high. At the top of this climb, the Zomaro pond is a quiet spot for a picnic among the beeches.
Many more Calabrian climbs start within reach of Locri and the Ionian coast; our Routes in the Area tool shows which ones are close to Antonimina.
