CLIMB SUMMARY

Climb summary by PJAMM ambassador Bruce Hamilton, Midway, Utah.

The climb up to Canolo Nuovo begins just inland from the coastal town of Siderno. We started at the beach and rode over a small hill just outside of town and then down again to get to the start of the Prestarona Conolo Nuovo climb.

This is a beautiful and quiet road with long sharp switchbacks early in the climb. There are steep mountains and high mesas and cliffs all along this course – people in Siderno told us this road was the Dolomiti di la Calabria. While it’s not quite the Dolomites it is easy to see why this climb might be considered Dolomites of the South.

We saw only a couple of cars along the entire climb and the road surface was good (by the standards of southern Italy). The top few kilometers wind into the forest in the national park. We highly recommend this beauty. There are many climbs in Calabria that go from the ocean to the Parco Nationale dell’Aspromonte – great approaches from all directions. But this one is among the nicest.
