Orjen climbs from sea level near Herceg Novi, on Montenegro's Bay of Kotor, up into the Orjen massif - 31.2 km (19.4 mi) at an average grade of 5.1% for 1,622 m (5,321 ft) of gain, finishing around 1,590 m (5,217 ft). It's currently ranked #438 in PJAMM's global difficulty database.
The road climbs through the Krivošije plateau, a set of high karst pastures in the eastern Orjen range dotted with abandoned stone shepherd huts. It was built by Austro-Hungarian soldiers in the 19th century to secure the border with Herzegovina, and the plateau saw real conflict in that era - the Krivošije Uprising of 1869 was a local rebellion against Austro-Hungarian conscription that briefly forced the empire to back down.
Orjen's summit (1,894 m) is the high point of the entire range and taller than Mount Lovćen, the more famous mountain across the Bay of Kotor near Kotor town - though this road tops out well below the true summit, on the plateau road built for wagons rather than the rougher track that continues higher.
Expect a dramatic shift in scenery as you climb: dense Mediterranean scrub and pine near the coast give way to cooler air, exposed karst, and sweeping views back down over the Bay of Kotor the higher you go.

Orjen gains 1,622 m (5,321 ft) over 31.2 km (19.4 mi) for an average grade of 5.1%. Like many long coastal-to-mountain climbs, the effort isn't evenly distributed: the steepest kilometer averages 12.2%, and the hardest mile comes in at 11.5%, both concentrated in the initial pitches out of the coastal villages before the road settles into the long, more moderate haul across the Krivošije plateau. The full 10 km split eases to 6.2%, reflecting the flatter high-plateau riding in the climb's second half, before finishing around 1,590 m (5,217 ft).
Roadway: The road is paved from the coast near Meljine up through the Krivošije plateau to around 1,590 m - a well-engineered, historic route originally built by Austro-Hungarian military engineers, with numerous hairpins on the lower slopes. Above this climb's endpoint, the road continues as a gravel track that gets progressively rougher toward Orjen's true summit, but that section isn't part of this route. Krivošije's villages are largely abandoned today, so don't expect services or road maintenance on the same schedule as a busier route - check conditions locally before a winter or early-spring visit, since snow can linger at altitude.
Traffic: Traffic is light once you're past the coastal towns near Herceg Novi - this is a quiet mountain road serving a mostly-depopulated plateau, used mainly by hikers, cyclists, and the occasional local or visitor headed up to the Orjen Nature Park.
Parking: Free street parking is available in Meljine and the surrounding coastal villages near Herceg Novi. There's no formal parking area on the mountain itself, but pull-offs are common along the plateau road for anyone wanting to stop and take in the views back over the Bay of Kotor.
This is a long climb from sea level to nearly 1,600 m, so plan water and food for several hours - Krivošije's villages are largely abandoned, and there are no reliable shops or fountains once you leave the coast. A compact crankset earns its keep on the steeper lower pitches, which touch over 12% before the grade eases on the high plateau.
Temperatures swing significantly between the humid Adriatic coast and the exposed karst plateau, so pack a real layer for the descent even in summer, and check the forecast carefully outside the warmer months, since this is a genuinely remote, high-altitude road.

Herceg Novi, at the base of this climb, is a historic town at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor with a fortified old town worth a visit before or after the ride. Higher up, the Krivošije plateau is a striking, half-abandoned landscape of stone shepherd huts and karst pasture - a monument in the village of Crkvice commemorates the 1869 Krivošije Uprising against Austro-Hungarian rule, a piece of local history most visitors to the Bay of Kotor never see.
Orjen is the wilder, higher counterpart to Mount Lovćen across the bay near Kotor - if you're basing yourself in the area for several days, both make a natural pair, along with the rest of the coastline's climbs. See what else is nearby with our Routes in the Area tool.
