INTRO
Another great Catskills climb. What a beast this is. It starts with a beautiful valley section followed by a ride into thick forest and the climb just gets steeper as you climb.
"Sugar Loaf/Red Hill Road is another solid Empire State climb that includes a double digit grade half mile within its lower half. The slope is variable overall and via a pleasant wooded route within a country neighborhood and with little traffic. At mile 3.5 turn left on Red Hill Road to continue. The grade eases as you approach the unmarked but obvious top (driveway on right) as the grade flattens and the road is a fund descent.” (This quote is provided with the approval of John Summerson from his book, The Complete Guide to Climbing (by Bike) in the Northeast, pg. 136.)
7.6% average grade. 22% of the climb is at 10-15% and 4% at 15-20%. the steepest quarter mile is 14.3%.
