INTRO

Both sides of this col are a good challenge. On a clear day, there are lovely views of many surrounding climbs from the top of the col. The west side from St Lary Soulon meanders through some small villages on the way to the top. The Tour de France typically climbs the east (Genos) side of the col before going on to a stage finish in the area (such as Pla d’adet or Col de Portet). The Genos side is more difficult with many switchbacks.
If you are based in St Lary Soulon for a few days, there are many good climbs to attempt in the area. You can choose whether you want great scenery, a tough challenge, climbs steeped in Tour de France history, or a combination of these.

This climb will be in Stage 17 of this year's 2022 Tour de France

One of the many challenging climbs out of St.-Lary-Soulon. The climb meanders through several small villages and farm areas. The views get better the higher you climb. From the col, you can see Pla d'Adet and the Col du Portet one direction and the Col de Peyresourde and Peyragudes in the other.

CLIMB SUMMARY

Cycling Col de Val Louron-Azet

Ride 10.7 kilometers gaining 724 meters at 6.8% average grade.

Climb begins by riding up D25 from its intersection with D929 in Saint Lary-Soulan.

You know when the Tour is coming through . . . and over . . .

This is a scenic ride in the Pyrenees to a col that has been featured in 10 Tour de France stages, most recently back-to-back in 2021 and 2022. In 2018 and 2021, Col d’Azet was the lead in to the stage finish at Col de Portet, which is the second hardest bike climb in France. Cols Portet and Azet have start points in Saint Lary Soulan.

Ride through Azet, pastureland and forest on our way to the top.

Many spots along this climb where you can look back at the giant hairpin of Col de Portet
