COMMENTS FROM RACE DIRECTOR CHRISTIAN PRUDHOMME - STAGE 2:
“Those familiar with the San Sebastián Classic will find themselves in familiar territory, especially when it comes to the eight-kilometre ascent of the Jaizkibel, which always plays a decisive role in the selection during that race. Beyond the summit, there’s a 20-odd kilometre drop into Saint-Sébastien.” (Tour de France Stage 2).
There are 5 categorized climbs on this stage although the first 40 kilometers is pure flat, followed by a brief but moderately steep ascent every 25 km. The big test and finish will be Jaizkibel at 8 kilometers and 5.3% average grade. Jaizikbel is well known in Spain as it is the decisive climb of the Clásica San Sebastián - it is actually featured twice during the race, but the second time up is near the end of the race. The steepest 500 meters (9.7%) and kilometer (9%) are on Jaizkibel.
It has been 31 years since the tour began in Spain in 1992. As with 1992, the first 3 stages were in Spain, all 3 beginning in San (aka Saint) Sebastian. This year only Stage 2 ends, but does not begin, in San Sebastian. This year's Stage 1 is at the other end of the spectrum from last year's start in Copenhagen which was 13 kilometers with only 43 meters of elevation versus 209 and 2,855 this year.
