The climbing really starts out of Chambéry. It is never very difficult, with a couple of slightly more challenging sections and some parts that seem almost flat. You are almost to the top when the road goes to two lanes uphill. This can be a good climb to use as a warm up or to get to other climbs. The other side of the col (from Les Échelles) is about 7k of slightly more challenging gradient and much better scenery.
