Wicked gradients combine with gravel and stunning views, making for a seriously epic and challenging climb. Thank goodness the 50 yards of +30% gradient at the end is paved!

The gravel for the first few miles until Henninger Flats campsite is smooth and probably rideable on 28mm road tires. The gravel between the campsite and the right turn at mile 7.8, however, becomes nearly mountain-bike territory - at least 38mm knobby tires recommended. We ran into some brave souls on smooth tires (around 40mm's) who seemed like they were doing fine, however.
The road after the right turn returns to less rocky gravel, with some sections of old concrete interspersed in. The last 50 yards to the summit is paved, which is a good thing, with grades reaching over 28%!
There is a water fillup and restrooms at the Henninger Flats campsite, around 1/3 of the way up the climb.
