INTRO
Climb begins at the junction of Rt 63 and South Mountain Road in Northfield. It is about 3 mile with a 1/2 mile stretch early on which averages 13% and tops out at about 18%. There is a short descent following this steep section but then more climbing the last mile is an average 7% with several double digit sections. The total climb has an average gradient of 7% (including the descent). Elevation gain is about 1000 feet, climbing elevation is about 1064 feet. The descent off S. Mtn Rd is both steep and has a number of curves. I find it a not so enjoyable descent. If one continues on S MTN Rd past the summit there is a relatively steep but short descent, a left on Gulf Rd and then another 1.75 mostly uphill (3% avg grade) brings you to an approximately 3 mile descent which is much easier to open up on (and freshly paved this past August).
