Roadway:
Very old, cracked pavement. Can be a bit gravelly and dusty in some places, but comfortably rideable on 23 or 25mm tires.

Traffic:
Closed to cars.

Parking:
There's parking at the start of the climb, but we HIGHLY recommend parking at the Red Box Picnic area and riding to it (4 miles away) to get even more stunning views of Mt. Baldy, Mt. Wilson, and the San Gabriel alpines. This parking lot is also central to two other awesome climbs in the area, Mt. Wilson and Mt. Disappointment.
Unsupported climb. Fairly deep in the mountains and out of cell service, but just off the Angeles Crest Hwy 2, which has plenty of cyclist and motorist traffic.

The closest water fillup and restroom is at Red Box Picnic Area, and there are vending machines at the Cosmic Cafe on Mt. Wilson
Before heading out on any cycling adventure check out our Things to Bring on a Cycling Trip and use our interactive check list to ensure you don't forget anything.
Consider touring the Mt. Wilson Observatory near the finish of the climb. There are also excellent hikes in the San Gabriel Mountains.

You can find several hotel options in nearby Pasadena, which has tons of great restaurants and coffee shops.

CLIMB SUMMARY

Panorama of barley flats road in the Los Angeles San Gabriel Mountains

After riding here from Pasadena (24 miles) this climb felt a bit short. I had also climbed 4,400 ft already, so at less than 1,000 ft gained, this climb didn’t seem hard at all. Still, it was a great experience on an old, secluded road - always some of my favorite climbs.

This climb is pretty short and most likely not worth a drive all the way up into the mountains just to do this one climb, so I would really recommend either riding all the way there from the start of Mt. Wilson, or parking at the Red Box Picnic area and combining this one with the better part of Mt. Wilson and Mt. Disappointment, both really close:

  • Mt. Wilson (green)
  • Mt. Disappointment (blue)
  • Tujunga Canyon (purple)

Tujunga Canyon Road is also a good climb, and can be combined with Barley flats to make one longer climb:
