CLIMB SUMMARY

Ride 5.2 miles gaining 1,185’ at 4.3% average grade

Mount Magazine is the highest point in Arkansas and the US Interior Highlands (includes parts of Arkansas, southern Missouri, eastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas).  This is one of but a few mountainous regions between the Appalachian and Rocky Mountains.  The name dates back 200 years or more to French hunters who referred to the barn as Magazine because it looked like a large barn or “magazine” where ammunition would be stored.

Climb summary by PJAMM ambassador Dan Razum, San Jose, California.

We start the climb just after Cove Creek. The ro ad is in decent condition, with a small shoulder in some places.  We didn't encounter very much traffic, the ride felt safe.

There are thick forests on either side of the road so there aren't many chances to get  scenic views.

There were a couple of pullouts that might have had views but unfortunately it was foggy when we were there, so we couldn't really tell if there was anything to see.

The summit is a little bit past the entrance to Mt Magazine State Park, maybe a quarter of a mile or so.  The summit isn't marked but it is just past a sign that says "Bear Crossing" We didn't see any such signs lower on the climb so maybe bears only like to cross the road near the top of the mountain??
