Over 21.3 km (13.2 mi) the road gains 1,140 m (3,740 ft) at 5.3% on average, rising from 231 m (757 ft) to 1,358 m (4,454 ft). The steepest 100 yards reach 10.7%, the steepest half kilometer (0.3 mi) averages 9.7%, the steepest kilometer (0.6 mi) 9.5%, the steepest 2 km (1.2 mi) 8.8% and the steepest 5 km (3.1 mi) 7.2%.

The steepest 10 km (6.2 mi) average 6.1%, so the remaining 11.3 km (7.0 mi) of the route are much gentler. That makes this a long, steady pacing climb rather than a wall: save something for the forest section above Rezzo, where the effort concentrates.
Roadway: Paved the whole way on the SP17 (Strada Provinciale di Passo Teglia), a narrow provincial road. Recent repairs have focused on the Molini di Triora side of the pass; on this northern side riders in spring 2026 found the older asphalt perfectly rideable on 25 mm tires. Landslides have cut the road more than once, so check the Provincia di Imperia road alerts before you go.

Traffic: Traffic thins out as you leave the valley floor behind. The busiest stretch is around Pieve di Teco itself, where the SS28 is a through road between the coast and Piedmont; once you are on the SP17 you are on a local mountain road.

Parking: Pieve di Teco is a compact historic town and its porticoed center is best seen on foot, so leave the car at the edge of town rather than in the core, then roll out onto the SP17 toward Rezzo.
Provisions: Fill bottles and eat in Pieve di Teco before you start, and plan to carry what you need for 21.3 km (13.2 mi) of climbing. The pass is at 1,385 m (4,544 ft), noticeably cooler than the valley, so a light jacket for the descent is worth the weight.

Gear: A compact crankset or a wide cassette is enough for the 5.3% average, with short ramps near 10%. A 25 mm tire has been fine on this road.

Pieve di Teco makes a good base for this ride and is worth a slow hour. Corso Mario Ponzoni has been porticoed since the 16th century, the Teatro Salvini is a tiny horseshoe-shaped theater from 1834 with about 90 seats, the Collegiata di San Giovanni Battista holds Ligurian Baroque paintings, and the Museo delle Maschere di Ubaga shows contemporary masks inspired by local myth and farming tradition. Locally, look for Ormeasco di Pornassio, a red wine made from Dolcetto grapes grown on steep terraced slopes, and for the dairy-and-potato dishes of the area's cucina bianca.

Pieve di Teco sits on the SS28, about 25 to 30 minutes by car from the coast at Imperia. Maintenance work on the Uveghi viaduct on that road is underway in 2026, so check traffic updates before you drive in. Most riders do this climb between April and September.

The beech forest at Rezzo, the old Marenca road and the Argentina valley on the far side of the pass are covered on our Passo Teglia (Molini di Triora) page, which ends at the same point. To see other climbs nearby or to build a longer route from here, try our Routes in the Area tool.
