Sauze d'Oulx gains 835 m (2,739 ft) over 8.9 km (5.5 mi) at a 9.5% average grade - one of the steeper sustained climbs in the area, with no real flat sections to recover on. The steepest 100 meters reaches 17.9%, and the steepest full kilometer averages 13.8%, both coming on the lower slopes as the road switches back out of Oulx. The steepest mile holds 13.7%, so a compact crankset and a wide-range cassette are worth having for this one.
Grade moderates somewhat through Sauze d'Oulx itself before the road narrows and climbs again above town toward Monfol.
Roadway: The SP214 is paved the entire way, in good condition through Sauze d'Oulx and up toward Monfol. Above the hamlet, the lane narrows further as it works into open pasture - fine for a road bike, but expect a rougher, less-trafficked surface on the final stretch.
Traffic: Traffic is light throughout, particularly outside the winter ski season. The road serves Sauze d'Oulx and a handful of farms above it rather than any through-route, so cars thin out noticeably once you're past town.
Parking: Oulx, at the base, has a train station on the Turin-Bardonecchia line with parking nearby, along with several free spots around the town center - a practical starting point whether you're arriving by car or by rail.
Provisions: Oulx is a real town with shops, cafes, and a train station, so it's easy to fuel up before starting. Sauze d'Oulx, roughly two-thirds of the way up, has restaurants, bars, and grocery stores that stay open through the summer season - the last reliable stop before the road narrows above town. There's nothing beyond that, so top off water bottles in Sauze d'Oulx if you're continuing to the finish.
Gear: A compact crankset or a wide-range cassette makes the steep lower kilometers, and the pitches above Sauze d'Oulx, considerably more manageable - this isn't a climb to take on a standard double if you're not used to sustained double-digit grades.

Oulx sits on the Turin-Bardonecchia-Modane rail line, with direct trains from Turin in about an hour - a rare case in the Alps where you can reach the base of a real mountain climb without a car. The square by the station has a handful of cafes and small hotels if you want to stay close to the start.
If you're building a longer trip around the Alta Val di Susa, Colle delle Finestre - one of the Giro d'Italia's most famous climbs - starts about 30 minutes away in Susa; our Routes in the Area tool is a good way to see what else is within reach nearby.
For something off the bike, the Strada dell'Assietta, a high mountain track along the ridge above Sauze d'Oulx, passes the site of the 1747 Battle of Assietta - worth a detour if you have a gravel bike or an afternoon to spare.

Cobbled sections at the beginning and in the middle. Heavy traffic on the first 3/4s but manageable. Fun climb! Beautiful views at the top.
