Cycling Bamford Clough - the steepest bike climb in the UK.
Ride only 3/10’s of a mile but gain 381’ at 24% over that stretch!!
Climb summary by PJAMM’s Brad Butterfield -
You’ll need to bring every ounce of strength to battle at Bamford Clough. Jetting straight up out of the town center in a residential area, our climb has signage denoting it as ‘Unsuitable for motor-vehicles.’ I have seen this sign on a few other steep UK climbs, but it never seemed totally justified. Bamford Clough thoroughly earns that branding though. Also, there is a sign for cyclists to dismount at the base of the brutal slope. Take it as a challenge and don’t lose traction. While short, the climb has no points of respite and no turns to ease the gradients. It is a fight to the top to keep traction and stay moving fast enough to keep from falling over. This is one of the steepest and most difficult sections of road that I have ever ridden in the world (this includes 31 countries for PJAMM bike climb documenting). . Parking is free on the streets of Bamford as well as on sections of the road which intersect at the summit of our climb.
In case you hadn’t noticed . . .
The start of this beast begins just past the Road Closed gauntlet.
