This route is not actually possible - the cane road passage uphill from Waipi'o shown on the map that then connects with Mud Lane doesn't actually go through (which I learned the hard way). You'll need to ride to Honoka'a and then continue up the Old Mamalahoa Highway (which is a great climb).
