The climb averages 7.7% over 11.9 km (7.4 mi), gaining 955 m (3,133 ft). The steepest 500 m averages 12.8%, the steepest kilometer 10.4%, the steepest 2 km 9.5%, and the steepest 5 km 8.4%. Even the steepest 10 km averages 8.3%, so there is little relief between the valley floor and Compet. Settle into a rhythm from the first bend rather than attacking from the bottom.
Roadway:  The climb follows the SP 12 di Vignola, a paved provincial road that links Pergine Valsugana with Vignola and Compet. Slope failures have briefly closed the roads to Vetriolo in recent years: a landslide at km 2.5 (between Assizzi and Vignola) closed the SP 12 on 21 July 2025 and it reopened the next day after rockfall clearing and repair of the safety netting, and the province scheduled resurfacing and vegetation work on stretches of the SP 12 for 31 August to 4 September 2026, so expect fresh or patched asphalt in places. Check the Provincia autonoma di Trento press office for road notices before you go.

Traffic:  This is a small provincial road serving hill villages and the Compet and Panarotta area, so traffic is mostly local. Compet is also the junction with the SP 11 from Levico Terme and the road toward Zivignago and Panarotta, so expect a few more cars there than on the lower slopes.

Parking:  Pergine Valsugana is a town of roughly 21,000 on the Valsugana railway line from Trento, with parking in and around the center. At the top, Vetriolo Terme has a small lot near the former baths and more parking beside Bar Ristorante Alpinetast, which can fill up on busy days; Compet has the Aurora albergo-ristorante.
Provisions:  Fill your bottles in Pergine before you start. The first reliable refreshment stop is at Compet, where the Aurora albergo-ristorante has been in business for decades, and Bar Ristorante Alpinetast is beside the paragliding launch at Vetriolo Terme.

Gear:  You finish about 900 m (2,950 ft) higher than you start, so pack a light jacket for the descent even on warm valley days. With 500 m stretches near 13%, a compact crankset or a wide-range cassette is a sensible choice.

Pergine Valsugana (482 m / 1,581 ft) is the natural base. Its Castel Pergine, on a hilltop at 657 m (2,156 ft), has been documented since the year 845, and the town is a short drive from Lake Caldonazzo and Lake Levico. The spa town of Levico Terme, whose arsenical-ferruginous waters were discovered in the early 18th century, is the other gateway to Vetriolo and makes an easy way to return: descend the SP 11 from Compet to Levico for a different view and a loop back toward Pergine.

At the top, Vetriolo Terme is the trailhead for the hike to Cima Panarotta (2002 m / 6,568 ft, about 600 m / 1,970 ft of climbing), and Compet sits on the E5 long-distance hiking route from Lake Constance to the Adriatic. The Menador (Kaiserjägerstrasse) and Monterovere climbs above Caldonazzo are natural companions for a second day in the Valsugana.
