PLAN YOUR ROUTE
We've partnered with Sherpa-Map.com to bring you the best route planning tool. With a PRO Membership you can use this climb as a reference when creating your route. Monterovere is short and relentless: 8.4 km (5.2 mi) at a 9.1% average, gaining 761 m (2,497 ft) with no descent at all.
It starts hard, with 10.3% for the first kilometer out of Caldonazzo, eases to 7.7% for the second, then climbs at 10.8% and 9.6% for km 2-4. Km 4-5 at 7.2% is the closest thing to a breather before the toughest stretch: 11.4% for km 5-6 and 10.6% for km 6-7 through the tight upper hairpins. The last full kilometer drops back to 7.9%, and the final few hundred meters to the SS 349 junction are nearly flat.
The steepest 0.5 km averages 13.6%, the steepest 1 km 12.0%, 2 km 11.2% and 5 km 9.9%. FIETS score: 7.2.
Roadway: Paved throughout. Today the SP 133 is a narrow mountain road - a single lane in places, with two short, narrow historic tunnels and blind bends where oncoming cars appear late. In May 2026 the Provincia autonoma di Trento began works to build a new 255 m one-way downhill tunnel, widen the road around it and add a roundabout at the SS 349 junction; the two historic tunnels will be kept as a one-way uphill lane. The road has been fully closed to traffic since June 19, 2026, with completion scheduled for late November 2027 and possible reopening during winter work pauses - check the province's road notices before you go.
Traffic: When the road is open, the forest sections are quiet, but this is a popular weekend road: motorcyclists gather at the Belvedere viewpoint partway up and plenty of local cyclists ride it on weekends. Take care on the narrow, blind bends.
Parking: Caldonazzo is a lakeside village at the head of Lake Caldonazzo; park in the village and roll to the start.
Provisions: Fill bottles in Caldonazzo - there are no services on the climb itself. At the top, the inn at Monterovere and the villages of the Lavarone plateau a few kilometers on are the nearest places for food and drink.
Gear: With a kilometer at 12% and half-kilometer ramps near 14%, low gearing is a must - a compact crankset with a 32-34 tooth sprocket is sensible. You finish about 760 m (2,490 ft) above the lake, so pack a layer, and since drivers see you late on the blind bends, a bright rear light is worth running even by day.

Caldonazzo sits at the head of Lake Caldonazzo, a summer lake village with a stop on the Valsugana railway from Trento. For Pergine, Levico Terme and the Panarotta, see our Passo del Vetriolo page - the Vetriolo and the Menador are a natural two-climb day, the same pairing the 2022 Giro used on its way to Lavarone.
At the top you're in First World War country. Between 1907 and 1914 Austria-Hungary built a line of forts across these plateaus to block the way toward Asiago - Forte Belvedere-Gschwent at Lavarone, Forte Campo at Luserna and Forte Busa Verle on the Vezzena highland. Busa Verle, at about 1,506 m (4,941 ft), is reached by the paved side road on the left from the Monterovere hotel toward Passo Vezzena. It was dismantled in the 1930s and sold to the town of Levico, which received funding to restore its ruin in 2012, and the director Luis Trenker served there for a time.
