CLIMB SUMMARY

Cycling Willis Street

Ride 1.4 miles gaining 732’ at 9.6% average grade.

This is the hardest bike climb in Connecticut with the steepest mile (11.3%) and at 13.5% quarter mile segment.

Climb summary by PJAMM ambassador Dan Razum.

This is a steep climb through a residential area with lots of houses.  There is a shoulder and the traffic doesn't speed by too quickly, so as long as you're careful it is ok. But make sure to stay on the shoulder (don't weave into the main road due to the steepness!) and be aware of several storm drains along the side of the road, you don't want to catch a tire in one of them.

The climb isn't too long but it is definitely a workout, it is steep from the beginning and it doesn't really let up until right before the end.  There are a lot more trees on the second half, so depending on the time of day, you might get a good amount of shade on the top half of the climb.

The top isn't marked but you will know you're there when you can't see any more uphill in front of you and you can finally rest your legs.

Finish - you’ll know it when you’re there.

If you descend, make sure to have good brakes, you have to come to a hard stop at the bottom, at the intersection with South Street.
