CLIMB SUMMARY

Cycling Meriden Waterbury Turnpike - the 6th hardest bike climb in Connecticut

Ride 1.1 miles gaining 530’ at 9.4% average grade.

Climb summary by PJAMM ambassador Dan Razum.

Climb start.

This climb is along a busy road with plenty of traffic.  At the bottom of the climb you have to bear left, across Old Mountain Road, to stay on Meridien-Waterbury Turnpike.  The traffic coming out of  Old Mountain Road has a stop sign, so technically you are ok, but you should still exercise caution.

Even though there is a lot of traffic on this road there is a wide shoulder and good visibility so we weren't overly concerned, it felt safe enough.  However, if you are nervous around traffic this climb may not feel comfortable to you.

The road is fairly steep from the start and the gradient is pretty uniform throughout.  The road is straight, with no curves, so you can basically see the whole road from the bottom.  The scenery doesn't really change, it's always just a steep road stretching out straight ahead.

At the top is another intersection, this one with East Street. Again, the cars on the right have a stop sign but it's still best to exercise caution and make sure the drivers see you.

Top of the climb.
