CLIMB SUMMARY

Cycling New River Highway

Ride 3.1 miles gaining 1,152’ at 7% average grade.

Climb start.

Climb summary by PJAMM Ambassador Dan Razum.

This climb is along Rte 116 South up to Graves Gap. Even though we are on Rte 116 South the entire climb is in the northwest direction.  So Rte 116 meanders around a bit but overall it heads in a southerly direction, just not on this section.

The road is in good condition through out.  There is no shoulder but we didn't encounter much traffic so it wasn't a concern.  There are lots of gentle twists and turns in the first half, which keeps things interesting but they aren't sharp enough to slow you down much on the way down.  In the second half there are some sharp switchbacks which help keep down the speed of any traffic.

There aren't any scenic views along this climb, the trees are too thick.  But the trees do provide some shade if the weather is hot.  The top is unmarked but obvious.

Overall, this is a nice climb on a smooth road through the woods with light traffic.
