Climb summary by PJAMM ambassador Bruce Hamilton:
Hurricane Mesa climb is located west of Zion National Park and is a beautiful climb with wide open views of the Southern Utah landscape. This climb can easily be combined with the Kolob Terrace Road climb in the same ride as the start locations for these two climbs are only a couple of miles from one another. Though it’s a short ride by PJAMM standards there is no water along this ride and in summer it could be quite hot.
This is a short, rugged climb – after a short stretch of not too steep right at the beginning, the remainder of the climb is mostly 9% or steeper. Road surface is not great but that wasn’t really noticeable on the climb – quite a bit of loose asphalt and bumpy surface kept me on the brakes for much of the descent. Ride ends at some sort of government or military base with signs with stern warnings about entering. We did not go past the signs but heard that it’s strictly policed. If you’re riding wide tires you may be able to take the right turn on the dirt road that will take you to Kolob Terrace Road.
Thank you Bruce!!
