INTRO

"The climb of the east side of MacDonald Pass along Route 12 near Helena is one of the most difficult in the state of Montana. Along a four lane road the grade is quite steady through some sweeping turns. There is a bit of speedy traffic on this one but not enough to ruin your ride. Toward the top good views arrive and the summit is signed (for elevation). Due to its sweeping turns and steady grade it is a fun descent as well. The west side of MacDonald Pass is a similar if much shorter ascent (3.8 miles at 5.7% average grade.)" (This quote is presented with the approval of John Summerson, from his book, The Complete Guide to Climbing (by Bike), 2nd Edition, pg. 190.)
