INTRO
The first 2 miles of this climb are on pavement.
Dug Jansen - I've thought about doing this on a gravel bike buthaven't tried it yet. Certainly the Nashbaum/Silver Mesa part of it (first 1400ft from Florida Rd) is great gravel bike material. Above the FS gate at 8700ft, it gets chunky. Ok climbing, but descending would be tedious. It can be rutted, rocky, muddy, sandy, depending on recent weather and communication tower traffic. If you're comfortable riding rough 4WD road at 10-15% grades, then it is rideable. Now June 2024 it is all dry, not too much sand, ruts not too bad, but always rocky in many spots.
Howard Grotts - Yes doable on a gravel bike. The road surface is 2 for most of it with a few sections up to 4 maybe on a 1 smooth to 5 extremely rough scale.
