George Street is home to the annual Bike Challenge for Major Taylor hosted by the Major Taylor Association each July. The event is named after Marshall W "Major" Taylor, the first African-American world champion cyclist (1899).  The event is presented by the Seven Hills Wheelmen and benefits the Major Taylor Association.
The average grade is 17.5%, but the gradient reaches 24%, according to official surveyors: https://www.majortaylorassociation.org/events/georgest-profile.shtml

(Our gradient tool is often inaccurate for short roads like this - just see our page on San Francisco's Steepest Streets for more examples!)

In addition to the parking lots shown on that map (P), there is street parking along Main Street, State Street, and Harvard Street, as well as other streets in the area.
Gear that can be found at this climb: Event snacks and prizes!

In addition to the raffle grand prize, a Giant Escape Disc 2 bike from Landry's Bicycles, three kids bikes from Schwinn and lots of other cool stuff. See the Complete prize list
Before heading out on any cycling adventure check out our Things to Bring on a Cycling Trip and use our interactive check list to ensure you don't forget anything.
Starting at the 2024 event, there will be a couple of fun rides hosted around the event:

4 p.m. Saturday, July 20: 34 miles with Seven Hills Wheelmen, with Major Taylor points of interest along the way.

8:30 a.m. Sunday, July 21: Ride to the Race, 17 miles, arriving at George Street in time to compete or just watch.

Both rides start at the Major Taylor statue.
