Cycling Monarch Pass West

Ride 8.8 miles gaining 2,755’ at 6% average grade.

While there is an excellent shoulder for the entirety of this climb, it is on busy Highway 50 and we thus do not recommend riding Monarch Pass for fun - if it is part of your loop from Buena Vista that includes Cottonwood Pass, maybe.  However, now that Cottonwood Pass is open on the backside, we strongly recommend doing that climb as an out-and-back from Buena Vista instead of including it on a loop that includes Monarch Pass.

Monarch Pass is located on the Continental Divide.
