INTRO
National Forest Service Map states NFD Road 051 is "Dirt Road Suitable for Passenger Cars".
Louis Ridgway - This climb can be done on a gravel bike. I would say a 3 overall for road surface on a scale of 1 smooth to 5 rough, but the last switchback to the top is very rough. You will need to be on a mountain bike is you want to ride the entire climb. There are a couple of other areas with short runs of rough surface. I have done this ride many times and a great view from the relay station. On this day (6-23-24) I was doing a longer easy training ride and keeping my pulse under 140 for the most part. I was on a friend’s e-mountain bike so did not work that hard. When I ride this on my regular mountain bike ride, it is a fairly easy climb till you get to the frog pond. From the frog pond to the top, I am working very hard.
Robert Barry - . This climb is rideable on a gravel bike. For NFD Road 051, the top half a mile pushes the envelope a little bit, but the rest is OK.
