INTRO
Overlook Fire Tower climbs 4 miles up the old woods road to the summit of Overlook Mountain, the southernmost peak of the Catskill Escarpment above Woodstock, New York, gaining 2,423 feet at an 11.4% average grade.
This climb is more of a short, sharp effort rather than a long grind.
Cycling is explicitly permitted on this route: the DEC allows bikes on the Meads Mountain Road trailhead trail to the fire tower and onward to Prediger Road, part of the Overlook Turnpike bicycle corridor. The surface is a rough (class 4 of 5) old road bed - hikeable and rideable, but not smooth - so a gravel bike with wider tires or a hardtail mountain bike is the right tool.
The payoff is one of the best views in the Catskills: a 60-foot fire tower (moved to this site in 1950, reopened to the public in 1999) with 360-degree views over the Hudson River Valley, the Ashokan Reservoir, and the Devil's Path range, plus the atmospheric ruins of the Overlook Mountain House along the way - a 19th-century resort hotel that burned down and was rebuilt three separate times before being abandoned for good.

The grade holds steady through dense forest for most of the route rather than concentrating into a single brutal pitch, with the final approach to the summit and fire tower easing only slightly.
Roadway: This is an old woods road/fire road, not a paved surface - contributors rate the surface class 4 out of 5 on a smooth-to-rough scale. It's doable on a gravel bike with wider tires or a hardtail mountain bike, but expect rocks, roots, and uneven tread throughout rather than smooth gravel.
Traffic: No vehicle traffic - this is a DEC hiking trail that also happens to be open to bikes, so expect to share the road with hikers, especially on weekends and holidays when the fire tower's observation cab is staffed and open to the public (weekends and holidays, June through Columbus Day). Ride at hiker speeds near the top and yield to foot traffic throughout.
Parking: The main trailhead lot on Meads Mountain Road is small and fills early on weekends. A second, larger lot sits one to two miles further up Meads Mountain Road if the first is full.
There's no water or services on the mountain - the last stop is in Woodstock itself, so carry what you need for a short but intense effort. Given the rocky, uneven old-road surface, wider gravel tires or a hardtail mountain bike will be far more comfortable than a typical road-oriented gravel setup.
Since this route shares the trail with hikers, consider a bell or another way to announce yourself when passing, and be prepared to dismount in tight or crowded sections near the summit and fire tower.

Woodstock, New York has hotels, restaurants, and bike shops just a couple of miles from the trailhead, and the climb is about a 2-hour drive from New York City. The fire tower's observation cab is only staffed and open to the public on weekends and holidays from June through Columbus Day, so plan around that window if climbing the tower itself is part of the goal.
