The climb up to the Cataloochee Ski Area can test you as it is steep. A dead end, you ride this one just to climb. The last half mile is the toughest on the route and the descent is a burner.

CLIMB SUMMARY

Cycling Fie Top Road, North Carolina - two-lane roadway curves through densely forested area, green and yellow foliage, road sign reads 15% grade

Cycling Fie Top Road, North Carolina.

Ride 2.9 miles gaining 1,730’ at 11.6% average grade.

This climb is a MONSTER -- no doubt about it.  The best way for a climb under four miles in length to get onto a state or country Top 10 list (here #4) is to be very STEEEEEEP!

Cycling Fie Top Road, North Carolina - intersection of Fie Top Road and Route 19, stone sign says Haywood County

Climb begins at the T intersection of Fie Top Road and Route 19.

Cycling Fie Top Road, North Carolina - views along the climb of heavy forestation, fall foliage

No distant views, but lovely surroundings along the climb, particularly in the fall.

Cycling Fie Top Road, North Carolina - old World War II troop transport truck on roadside, vines growing out of it, fall foliage

Very cool WWII vintage troop transport at mile 1.4.

Cycling Fie Top Road, North Carolina - climb finish, junction of several dirt roads, road signs read "Ski Area 1 Mile", Ranch Road, "Steep Grade Save Breaks Use Lower Gear"

Climb finishes at a junction with several dirt roads.

Cycling Fie Top Road, North Carolina - signs for Ghost Town Village, large parking lot, train in parking lot

Ghost Town amusement park -- perfect parking!

There is a 100+ space abandoned parking lot at the start.

This park opened in 1961 and was extremely popular at the end of the 20th century.  The park closed in 2002.  There is an entire ghost town (not a real ghost town) and carnival area at the top of the abandoned lift.
