INTRO

"Overland Pass Road is a solid climb up the east side of Blue Knob State Park south of Altoona, PA.  Over moderate grade to start, at mile 0.4 turn left onto Overland Pass Road which takes you the rest of the way up the hill.  You find stout grade immediately and soon the road plunges into the trees, never to return to ridge views.  After several miles of solid climbing you encounter a flat just before you arrive at some condos.  Just beyond the condos (and where the road ahead of you turns to gravel) turn right to continue over shallow grade.  Soon however a steep half mile takes you to the unmarked but obvious summit among a few mountain cabins (road continues but descends and then dead ends)." CLIMB SUMMARY

Cycling Overland Pass-Pavia Road

Ride 4.7 miles gaining 1,596’ at 6.5% average grade.

This climb is a great compliment to Blue Knob-Pavia Road on the opposite side.  Together you ride 8.1 miles gaining a serious 3,230’ in altitude!  There are some very challenging segments along this climb - ¼ mile at 12% and ½ mile at 11% (in the middle section of the climb).

The climb begins on Overland Pass Road on the east side of Blue Knob State Park and is in the Allegheny subrange of the Appalachian Mountains. The climb ends at the highpoint of the road (which changes to Pavia Road just after you pass the resort complex on your right at mile 3.2).

That’s a wrap.

Roadway surface and traffic:  There is minimal traffic on the climb.  The road was in somewhat rough shape in September, 2020, but not a problem to ride.
